Women's Flag Football
On May 17th, the Stanford Football Practice Field – Dan Elliott Field came alive with laughter, high-fives, strategy sessions, and unforgettable plays, as 40 women took to the turf for a flag football tournament unlike any other. From first-timers learning the ropes to experienced athletes weaving through defenders, it was a celebration of community, competition, and female empowerment—and the vibes were absolutely electric.
Women's sports plus Stanford Football athletes is a powerful partnership! What made the event even more special was a powerful show of support from Stanford Football. Over 15 athletes from the Stanford football team showed up—not just to cheer, but to coach, draw plays on whiteboards, break down defenses, and hype up every touchdown. They brought their competitive knowledge, their energy, and their belief in the importance of supporting women in sports. Every team had its own Stanford player acting as coach, and the sideline huddles felt like mini NFL meetings—except with more laughter and even tighter bonds. Coaches diagrammed routes, ran walk-throughs, and boosted morale. It was mentoring at its best, and the impact was immediate and inspiring.
All skill levels had one goal: have a blast! From seasoned flag football veterans to those learning to pull a flag for the first time, the mix of skill levels made the event dynamic, inclusive, and fun. Teams were randomly formed to encourage new friendships, and from the first whistle to the final championship play, the focus was fun, camaraderie, and leaving it all on the field.
Between games, players and supporters were treated to delicious Ike’s sandwiches, keeping everyone fueled and happy. And as a keepsake from the day, every player and volunteer received a custom crewneck sweatshirt—a cozy reminder of the effort and energy poured into each game.
Sequoia, Redwood and Wisteria dominate the turf! After a full day of fierce competition and friendly rivalries, the final standings emerged: Sequoia – 1st Place Champions! Redwood – 2nd Place, and Wisteria – 3rd Place. But it wasn’t just the rankings that had people talking—it was the championship game, a triple-overtime thriller that kept everyone on the edge of their seats. With every possession, defense tightened, plays got bolder, and the sideline roared with support. When Sequoia finally clinched the win, the celebration was instant—teammates sprinted across the field, jumping and hugging as confetti (figuratively) flew.
This wasn’t just a tournament—it was a movement. A reminder that when women are given the space, support, and encouragement to compete, they rise. The energy never dipped, the smiles never faded, and the buzz of victory and friendship carried into the evening.
